When people started looking for lots of fossils,
they found out that the rocks were important.

Rocks came in different layers.
Some layers had some types of fossil in them
and other layers had different types.



Georges Cuvier knew about the story of Noah and the flood from the Bible,
but each layer of rock had different fossils in it,
so he didn't think a single flood was the answer.

There were layers with sea-shells.
On top of them were layers with land-animals.
On top of them were more shells.

He thought there might have been lots of floods in the past.
